New reforms continue their rollout throughout 2025 in four stages, aiming to address skilled labour gaps, simplify requirements, and support both employers and migrant workersÂ
 Interim Visa Work Rights (effective 8 April 2025)
Applicants transitioning from a work visa (or student visa with termâtime work) to a new AEWV will now receive an interim visa granting full work rights while their application is processed. Â Latest Changes to the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) – April 2025 Â Time spent under this interim visa counts toward both relevant workâexperience requirements and the maximum AEWV durationÂ
Removal of Median Wage Threshold (from MarchâApril 2025)
The previously mandatory âmedian wageâ floor has been scrapped. Instead, employers must ensure wages comply with the applicable NZ minimum wage and match the market rate for the specific occupationÂ
- Lowered Experience Requirement & Visa Durations
Work experience expectations have dropped from three to two years, widening the talent poolÂ
- Employer Advertising & JobâCheck Streamlining
For lowerâskill roles (ANZSCO 4â5), the prior 21âday advertising requirement through Work & Income is replaced by a âgoodâfaithâ declaration. INZ is also redesigning the JobâŻCheck process for lowârisk employers to improve turnaround timesÂ
- Increased Income Threshold for Dependents
AEWV holders must now earn at least to sponsor dependent children, a substantial rise from the previousÂ
